Vasily Alekseevich Sidorenko (1911-1978) – senior lieutenant of the Workers ‘and Peasants’ Red Army, participant of the Great Patriotic War, Hero of the Soviet Union (1945).

Biography

Vasily Sidorenko was born on January 14, 1911 in the village of (now a settlement in the Kursk region). He graduated from high school and four courses of the Dnepropetrovsk Mining Institute. He worked first at a mine, then at a plant in Voronezh. In May 1942, Sidorenko was called up to serve in the Peasants’ Red Army. From October 1943 – on the fronts of the Great War.

By July 1944, Junior Lieutenant Vasily Sidorenko commanded a platoon of 45 of the 1st Battalion, 599th Infantry Regiment, 145th Infantry Division, 1st Infantry Corps, 43rd Army, 1st Baltic Front. Distinguished himself during the liberation of the Vitebsk region of the Byelorussian SSR. On July 10, 1944, when Sidorenko’s battalion was surrounded near the town of Postavy, a platoon under his command successfully repelled German counterattacks, destroying more than 100 enemy soldiers and officers, which made it possible to break out of the encirclement.

By the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945 for „exemplary performance of combat missions of the on the front of the fight against the German invaders and the courage and heroism shown at the same time” Star „under the number 7411.

In December 1944, with the rank of senior lieutenant, Sidorenko was transferred to the reserve. Lived and worked in Kursk. Died on January 18, 1978.

Honorary Citizen Postav. He was also awarded the Orders of the Red Banner and the Red Star, a number of medals.

A street in Postavy is named in honor of Sidorenko.
